I. Violence Prevention Through Teaching
Social Skills in the Classroom (KSU)

Social Skills In the Classroom (AU)
The topic of both workshops is identical. Participants will raise
their level of awareness of violence in our society and its impact on
children and the classroom. Participants will be better prepared to
respond to the changing educational environment through the infusion
of a comprehensive social skills curriculum in the classroom.
II. Educationally Safe School Environments
(KSU)
Making Your Classroom Psychologically Safe
(AU)
The topic of both workshops I is identical. The purpose of this
workshop is to assist educators in identifying factors in school
buildings and within classrooms that impact on student security and
safety - both physical and psychological. The course will assist
educators in organizing and managing their classrooms to provide an
optimal learning experience for the students. This offer is of
special interest for those who are planning to enter education and
for practicing teachers and school personnel
III. Family Dynamics: Correlation Between
Family Experiences and Classroom Behavior
The goal is to expand the understanding of family dynamics as it
relates to building skills for nurturing youth, the development of
empathy and self-discipline and the ability to deal effectively with
the pressures of violence in today's society. Emphasis will be on
family conflict management and non-violent parenting while focusing
on solutions instead of consequences.
IV. Gangs, Guns, Drugs, and
Violence
This workshop will provide school personnel with an increased
awareness of the myth, reality, and family sources of youth violence,
drugs, guns, and gangs. Participants will become acquainted with the
factors that cause youth to be attracted to a violence-influenced
and/or substance-abusive lifestyle. Practical intervention and
prevention strategies, curricula, and programs will be shared with
participants.
V. Managing the Classroom for
Success
This course will deal with the different definitions of class-room
management, different components of effective classroom management
and focus on practices that have resulted in improved classroom
instruction and academic achievement.
VI. Career Development: Applications in
Today's Classroom (K-12)
The purpose of this workshop is to help teachers better understand
their role in the career development process. A K-12 career
development model will be presented that identifies materials and
resources.
VII. Reaching and Teaching the A.D.H.D.
Child
Participants will be able to differentiate between ADHD and related
disorders, understand various approaches to treating children with
ADHD, including behavior management, psycho-pharmacology, and parent
education. Participants will also develop a repertoire of
intervention strategies for working with children with ADHD in the
classroom.
VIII. History of Violence thru the
Ages
Through understanding the past, we can better understand and plan for
the future. This workshop will help the student to view the past
violence of various cultures and political groups and how violence
was and is used to control people. This knowledge can assist in
addressing and reducing the violence our society is dealing with now
and will in the future.
IX. Working Effectively with Diverse
Groups
This workshop will explore the characteristics, problems and common
needs of diverse groups of youth. Through discussion, video, team and
individual exercises and selected readings, workshop participants
will learn how to determine the common needs of various groups in
order to bring them into the mainstream.
X. Building Academic Resiliency in Stressed
Children
Today's child is exposed to events on a daily basis which can result
in dramatic stress. Teachers, care-givers, parents and others can
learn what causes a child to be stressed or traumatized, how to
recognize the symptoms, how stress can affect children, what can be
done to reduce the development of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
(PTSD), and how these children can be provided opportunities to
transform stress and build resiliency.
XI. Skills and Strategies to Cope With
Elementary and Secondary School Violence (KSU)

Prevention Skills for Elementary and Secondary Students
(AU)
The topic of both workshops is identical. As children grow and
develop they face many changes of body and mind. Along with these
changes, youngsters also must deal with problems which arise from
their interpersonal relationships with parents, peers, and others. In
today's world, it is these interpersonal relationships which can
cause dejection, rejection, depression, loneliness, etc. It is during
periods like these that youngsters are most vulnerable and the most
likely to engage in the least desirable and dangerous activities such
as joining a gang, using chemical substances, and even committing
suicide. This workshop will offer a directed-lesson approach to help
students acquire the necessary skills to cope during their school
years and beyond.
XII. Domestic Violence, Causes and
Prevention
The purpose of this workshop is to provide participants information
and knowledge about domestic violence, its history and social aspects
and laws pertaining to it. The participants will raise their level of
awareness of domestic violence from the perspective of society, the
batterer, the victim, and the children involved.
XIII. Using Classroom Art in Building
Self-Esteem (AU)
The purpose of the workshop is to provide participants with a
practical understanding of the ways in which group art and
self-esteem building techniques can be integrated into the classroom.
Through the use of lecture, group exercise, and audio-visual aides,
and discussion, we will educate the participants on the various ways
they can integrate self-esteem building and various art techniques
within the elementary and secondary classroom setting to enhance
their students learning objectives.
XIV. Understanding the Educational Inclusion
Process as it Relates to Children (AU)
The purpose of the workshop is to provide participants with a basic
understanding of the educational inclusion process from a
developmental perspective. The presenter will provide an overview of
emotional and developmental challenges, from early childhood to
adolescence. Development, both normal and atypical, will be explored
as well as how a child's atypical behaviors can impact classroom
learning. Workshop presenters will provide practical approaches to
working with emotionally and developmentally handicapped children in
the classroom setting.
XV. Group Process Within the Classroom
Curriculum: Practical Approaches for Educators (AU)
This workshop will provide the participants with a practical
understanding of the ways in which the group process can be utilized
in the classroom setting. Participants will be exposed to the various
forms of group work that can be adapted into the classroom
curriculum. The use of lecture, audio-visual aides, discussion, and a
special emphasis on group exercise will allow the participants to
learn more fully how the group process can benefit the students in
their classroom and improve the learning process.
XVI. Building Self-Esteem Through the
Curricula (KSU)
The workshop will provide a practical understanding of the ways
self-esteem building techniques can be integrated into the classroom.
Through lecture, group exercises, audio-visual aids, and discussion,
the participants will be educated on the various ways they can
integrate self-esteem building techniques to enhance their students'
learning objectives.
XVII. Fair Play: Violence Prevention in the
Sport Arena, Grades K-12 (AU)
This workshop is of interest to anyone who works with youths in
grades K-12. The participants will learn techniques to reduce stress,
to defuse tension, and to promote discipline and team interaction in
the sport arena, so that the players as well as the spectators will
have the pleasure to enjoy a peaceful performance.
XVIII. Helping "At Risk" Students Succeed
(AU)
The purpose of this course is to present programs and strategies that
help At-Risk students succeed in a regular school setting and in
Alternative School Programs. This course will examine the many
components that are needed to make the Alternative School Program
effective and different from the traditional school programs. The
workshop will introduce strategies and teaqching methods that have
helped At-Risk students overcome their problems and become successful
in their new learning environments.
XVIX. Bully-Free Schools
This workshop will provide participants with information about
bullying behavior and how to prevent it. The workshop will emphasize
the effects that the bullying can have on the victims and will
suggest treatments. The presenter will explore how to provide a sense
of security to today's students in schools.
